Recieved my new van from AMS Vans 2 months ago today (AN imaculate 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan with a Rollex conversion)I tell you this not to boast but to tell you how pleased I am with not only the van but the company. Dallas my salesmen went the extra mile working with my insurance and me to get me into the best van I could afford. Although delivery was delayed because of the worst winter storm to hit Georgia in a 100 years Dallas contacted me daily with updates. If you are looking for a new van or a huge selection of quality used van I would highly recomend AMS Vans

Been a while since I updated last being a one man operation and going to school full time makes it pretty hard to keep up with what's new. I did however have a chance to meet with Professor Ming Zhu who developed and has had some success with Scalp Acupuncture for treating MS & SCI. As soon as I get my notes together I'll post what I learned there. For now I've added Into the Water & Out of the Wheelchair and MEMS & SCI to Another Path

On Tuesday, April 12th, wheelchair activists, family members and other supporters will “Spring Into Action” in the nation’s capitol. Their message: With the establishment of a clinical trial network and adequate funding, curing paralysis is now a realistic goal.Organized by CureParalysisNow, a group of volunteer grassroots activists from the online CareCure Community, the Rally is a “first” for the largely invisible disabled population. Armed with statistics on the costs of their care versus the cost of a cure, they will gather on the west side of the Capitol Building at 10 am.

Some of us on the CareCure site have decided that with the loss of Christopher Reeve, the spinal cord injured (SCI) community needs to serve notice to our lawmakers that we plan to pick up his torch. After the rally we will meet with our legislators. We have legislative talking points to present to the legislators which will break down Care for SCI and Cure for SCI into dollar terms.
Our goals are 1) passage of the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Act plus funding-$300 million-to develop a clinical trial network in the United States and 2) increased emphasis within NIH towards expediting a cure for CNS-related paralysis.
We will rally on the west side of the Capitol building in Washington D.C. at 10:00 a.m. The speakin

Stem Cells Help Paralyzed Rats Walk
IRVINE, Calif. (AP) - So far, not a single person has been helped by human embryonic stem cells. But in cramped university labs, a young neurobiologist with movie star good looks, a Carl Sagan-like fondness for the popular media and an entrepeneur's nose for profits is getting tantalizingly close.

Miami Project scientists Mary Bartlett Bunge, Ph.D. and Damien Pearse, Ph.D. announced today the results of their research that showed paralyzed rats regained 70% of their normal walking function! The study tested an innovative treatment that combined Schwann cell grafts with injections of cyclic AMP and rolipram. This triple combination strategy saved axons from dying and resulted in more axon growth within the Schwann cell grafts. The triple-treated animals had a 500 percent increase in nerve fibers in the graft area.
"This work opens up new possibilities for treatments for spinal cord injured humans," said Dr. Bunge. "In the 15 years that I have been at The Miami Project, this is the most exciting and important work that has been done in my laboratory."
What is exciting about these new findings is the amount of recovery seen and that all aspects of this combination strategy could be possible in humans. Rolipram has been tested in multiple sclerosis trials and has been given as an antidepressant. The Schwann cells can be taken from a paralyzed person's own peripheral nerve, preventing the body from rejecting the cells.
"This work represents a very important piece of the puzzle for The Miami Project and our efforts to find the cure for paralysis. We feel these results represent real hope for moving our science closer to the clinic and helping those who suffer from spinal cord injury in the near future," said Scientific Director W. Dalton Dietrich, Ph.D.

Our project has revolved around combining treatments to answer the problems of spinal cord injury. Dr. Peduzzi has been working with cell combinations including OEG's, BSC's, and Nuerospheres. Dr. Peduzzi has used several different Matrices to hold the cells in place. Dr. Peduzzi has also used Inosine to stimulate growth along with other growth factors and Chondrotinase ABC to disrupt scar tissue. All of these treatments have been used together is some sort of single treatment to stimulate functional recovery. Dr. Peduzzi has seen improvement in the animals and restoration of some function. Dr. Phttp://main.uab.edu/show.asp?durki=34963eduzzi is also doing a direct comparison with Olfactory Mucosa transplants to our combination treatments. The next step is to try to add one or more of the single treatments to the Mucosa to see if she can get better results. Dr. Peduzzi will try and add additional OEG's, Inosine, Chondr. ABC to the Mucosa graft. Our goal is to raise $50,000 dollars to complete this round of animal testing. Once we have the data from this round of tests Dr. Peduzzi feels we can then proceed with a human trial. We need to complete this series of animal test to warrant a human trial.

On June 6th, 2004 hundreds of people on a mission will converge upon the World Financial Center Winter Garden in downtown Manhattan. They are coming from many different places and from all walks of life. Only, many of these people cannot walk because they have been
paralyzed with spinal cord injuries. They are coming to "Rally for the Cure," an event to raise money for spinal cord research. Christopher Reeve is scheduled to attend as their honored "Hero of Hope," joined by other celebrities who believe that although fate may have temporarily restrained those with spinal cord injuries, science holds the key that will set them free.
Rally for the Cure is a grassroots event organized by those with injuries, their family members, friends and supporters. Their first group fundraiser was held in 1998 at the same location and raised 1.7 million dollars in a single evening, setting a new record. Today,
they have more members and a website (www.rallyforthecure.org), where people can get detailed information about the event.
The money raised will go to The Spinal Cord Injury Project at Rutgers University. This world-class research center, headed by Dr. Wise Young, is focused on finding practical breakthroughs, and expediting progress through collaboration with other research centers. It is estimated that there are over 1,000,000 people in the world with spinal cord injuries, 250,000 of them in the U.S., with over 11,000 new cases each year.
It is especially meaningful that this year's fundraiser is returning to the Winter Garden, which was almost destroyed in the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center. The Winter Garden withstood a terrible tragedy, was repaired with care and passionate commitment, and now stands again in its original splendor. Those coming on June 6th believe that the same fate awaits people in wheelchairs.

Two years & Counting
I almost felt sorry for myself today all I could manage was retrospect. Today I makes 2 years, I guess it's kind of a major milestone for us with SCI. If ya don't have it by now yer not gonna get it. My looking inward only reinforced what I've felt since being injured. Although it is catastrophic actually being paralyzed out right sucks I never thought of it as a major thing, just a minor inconvenience. Today when I looked back I've achieved damn near all the goals I set for myself in rehab, and figured my life isn't too awfully bad especially when I took into consideration some of the things you going on. Iraqi war, poverty, damn I have it great compared to the struggles people in underdeveloped countries go thru daily just to survive. Then I think about the kids that were in rehab the same time I was, especially the ones with higher level injuries I wonder how their doing. I think about my aging parents. Because of what old timers para's and quads went through (the lack of knowledge about SCI, adaptations that didn't come around until years later) I will probably outlive some of my friends and go on to a ripe old age. I may never walk again in the end God will decide that. In the mean time there are other things that are of bigger concern. Damn and I was so looking forward to some self pity! I have to wonder Do others out there mark their anniversaries or as time goes by does it just become another day?
